By 1969 the Shelby Mustang had largely grown into the ultimate GT express, particularly as the GT500. Complete with a luxuriously appointed interior and a multitude of options and standard features including power brakes and steering, air conditioning, automatic transmissions and a host of other cozy elements, the once hard-riding, race-bred Mustang had matured into something the majority of its customer base would covet—a comfortable, capable performance car with pedigree and exclusivity to its breeding.
With gobs of torque under the hood, the 428 CI V-8-equipped GT500 propelled drivers effortlessly over hills and through canyons, along boulevards and, of course, down straightaways. Depending on the axle ratio of a particular car, the GT500 could be excruciatingly quick or devastatingly fast, and very few cars could match the GT500 package.
A comprehensive restoration was completed in 2010 on this 1969 Shelby GT500, CSM no. 2578. One of 16 produced in special-order Grabber Yellow, this desirable Shelby features the numbers-matching Ram Air 428/335 HP Cobra Jet V-8 engine bolted to a C6 Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission and exceptionally high 3.00:1 axle ratio. CSM 2578 is well appointed with power disc brakes, power steering,
Sport Deck rear seating, factory air conditioning, tinted glass, black leather interior, a center console, wood-grain interior trim, AM radio with new speakers and the Visibility Group, a relatively rare option consisting of right-side rearview mirror, glovebox light and lock, luggage compartment interior light, brake-warning light and Deluxe seat belts with warning light among other helpful indicators.
Featuring full instrumentation, Shelby Mustangs provided drivers with information like road speed, engine speed, trip mileage, oil pressure, alternator amperage and more. This GT500 wears authentic Shelby GT500 wheels wrapped with period-correct Goodyear Polyglas tires and features restoration photos, a Marti Report and build sheet. Listed in the Shelby Registry, the dashboard has been signed by Carroll Shelby.
While it is rare enough in Grabber Yellow, the unique collection of options marks 2578 as a penultimate example of Shelby’s GT express.
