For the first time, Bugatti chief executive Wolfgang Durheimer has revealed that the firm’s replacement to the iconic Veyron will have a higher top speed. Additionally, he confirmed that it will be more usable on the track and feature better brakes.
The news was confirmed during ‘The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering’ at Monterey Car Week 2015 while Durheimer was speaking with Car and Driver. Understandably, he remained quite coy about the new hypercar, known online as the Bugatti Chiron, and failed to reveal certain numbers and performance figures the marque is targeting with the new car.
Discussing this, Durheimer said “Internally, we had some hard-numbers targets, but I am not talking about those today. The time to talk about them hasn’t arrived yet, but it will come soon…The interesting thing is that when you are leading the pack, when you are a champion, you have a lot of guys being jealous and wanting to beat you.
“You need to define for yourself where you think you can improve the most. You listen to the customers. You listen to the journalists. You listen to the internet. And you talk intensively to the engineers. Then you specify a package and say, “This will be the next car to beat,” Durheimer said.
According to inside sources, the Chiron will feature the same basic quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 engine as the Veyron. However, boost will be increased and at least two of the turbos will be electrically driven units. As a result, the new French hypercar should pump out 1500 hp and consequently be capable of hitting 100 km/h in just over 2 seconds before topping out at over 450 km/h. The revised seven-speed dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive system featuring torque vectoring will also aid in achieving these numbers.
The car will be based around the same carbon fibre architecture as the Veyron but it is reported that over 90 per cent of the parts will be brand new or revised. These new parts will be both stronger and lighter in an effort to ensure that the Chiron weighs less than the Veyron. Via GtSpirit
