It’s no secret that over the last few years Cadillac’s ambition to be a serious rival to the luxury German manufacturers like BMW, Audi and Mercedes in terms of quality, performance, and all-round desireability has resulted in a vast improvement of their vehicles all-round. Their latest creations, the ATS-V Sedan and ATS-V Coupe take direct aim at the BMW M3 and BMW M4 respectivley. A similar battle will take place on the track too, with the ATS-V.R racecar taking on the best from around the world.
Of course that’s no easy task considering the competition, but the ATS-V models wade into battle with some serious straight-line performance at their disposal. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3.6 litre V6 which produces 455 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual, with an 8-speed paddle-shift unit available as an option. Equipped with the 8-speed transmission, the ATS-V hits 60 mph from a standind start in just 3.9 seconds, while the top speed is 185 mph.
Key to the Cadillac ATS-V’s performance are is the turbocharging system, which features lightweight, low-inertia titanium-aluminide tubines and a patented low-volume charge air cooler, both of which contributes to more immediate power delivery. Other upgrades to the engine include titanium connecting rods and a high-performance lubrication system. Cadillac say the ATS-V Sedan an Coupe have both been developed on the track, with approximately 90 percent of the Twin Turbo’s peak torque available from 2,400 rpm to 6,000 rpm. This broad torque curve delivers responsive, sustained power at all rpm levels.
The chassis of the ATS-V has also undergone some modifications, and thanks to high-performance add-ons, like a strut tower brace, it’s 25 percent more rigid than the standard car. Other highlights of the ATS-V’s chassis include Magnetic Ride Control, Performance Traction Management with five selectable modes, and massive Brembo brakes.
Options for the car include a Carbon Fiber Pack, which as the name suggests includes carbon fiber aerodynamic aids, including a front splitter, hood vent trim, side sills, rear spoiler and rear diffuser. The optional Track Pack includes a data logger and a lighter battery – while also removing the floor mats and tire inflator kit in an effort to save some weight.
The Cadillac ATS-V Sedan and Coupe are scheduled to start production in the spring of 2015. Prices haven’t been announced yet.
