McLaren and Ferrari have been battling it out on the streets and race circuits since the 1960’s, so when Ferrari revealed the 458 Speciale which was rapidly heralded as the best supercar of 2014, McLaren knew they had to do something spectacular to beat it.
At the Geneva Motor Show 2015 they revealed their riposte – the 675LT. Based on the 650S, the 675LT uses something pretty special as its inspiration – the LT stands for Long Tail, an homage to the 1997 F1 Longtail which was used to homologate the racing car of the same name. That car has drastically longer rear bodywork though, whereas the 675LT is less extreme.
At the front the 675LT has the same general look as the 650S, but with a much longer and more aggressive front splitter arrangement in carbon fibre, along with new winglets ahead of the front wheels. The side sills are extended outwards and now include a brake cooling duct where it joins the rear arch. The side cooling intakes are larger too, while there’s a new polycarbonate louvred engine cover to aid cooling.
The rear is where things really change though, with a dramatically changed rear bumper featuring vents at the sides and a huge carbon functional diffuser. The new twin circular pipe titanium exhaust system exits between the rear lights underneath the new Longtail spoiler. This is 35mm longer than the standard model and is 50% larger overall when working as an airbrake. A new set of lightweight alloys completes the look.
Under the new engine cover sits a heavily reworked version of the 650S’s 3.8 litre twin turbo V8, producing 666 bhp and 516 lb/ft of torque. Combine this with the 100 kg weight reduction from the extra use if carbon fibre and the performance stats are incredible. 0 – 62 mph takes 2.9 seconds and 0 – 124 mph is dealt with in 7.9 seconds. The top speed drops 2 mph to 205 mph though as there is extra drag from the aero setup.
The 675LT is limited to 500 units and went on sale at the Geneva show for £259,500 but all 500 are already sold. Source: botb
