There’s Only One Reason Why You Need To Care About The BMW X4 M40i

The X4 was launched last year but now BMW has unveiled the new top end M40i model. Like the 2 Series-based M 235i, the X4 M40i isn’t an official M division model, but it’s received a number of performance and handling upgrades that separates it from the base offerings. That’s a good thing, but while reading through the official BMW press release we happened to notice something.

The X4 M40i is powered by a newly developed M Performance twin turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 355 hp between 5,800 and 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque comes to 343 lb-ft.
BMW claims the X4 M40i delivers best-in-class-acceleration, but that’s not what we really care about here. It’s the engine. Based on everything we know, this is the same unit that’ll power the upcoming M2, the model we’re willing to bet will be the best M division car since the 1 Series M Coupe, its immediate predecessor.

For what it’s worth, the new X4 M40i also comes with four-wheel-drive with rear-wheel-drive characteristics, a sportier chassis tuned to M Performance specs, and a bunch of other luxury bits. Sales will begin in the US this February, not long after the M2 will make its big debut at either LA or Detroit.
